Insidious 2 seems like it's one of those films that Wan made more for the studio than for himself. A worthy sequel that, with the original film, forms a set that is among the best that terror has given us in recent years. Submits to the tired trappings of sequelitis, attempting to fill in too many holes, relate too many backstories, and remind us of too many references to the first film to properly focus on delivering the same caliber of effective scares.

The high moral seriousness of the central conceit in both Insidious films -- that of a haunted child -- undoubtedly deserves more delicate touches and more sobering scares. It's unfortunate that the director who gave us one of the best horror films of the year with The Conjuring is the same guy delivering the terribly underwhelming Insidious Chapter 2 less than two months later. Insidious: Chapter 2 isn't as honestly terrifying as the original, but it rates as okay horror fun.
